Is Your Computer a Slowpoke? Easy Ways to Fix a Slow Computer.

Give your slow computer a boost with these simple, neighbourly tips.

Have you ever sat down to check your email or look at photos of the grandkids, only to find yourself waiting… and waiting? We’ve all been there. It feels like your computer is wading through molasses! The good news is that a slow computer doesn’t always mean you need a brand-new one. Often, it just needs a little “spring cleaning” and a fresh start. Here are two of the easiest ways I help my neighbours get their speed back.

The Magic Restart: A Fresh Start for Your Tech

Think of your computer like a busy kitchen during a big family dinner. After a few hours, there are crumbs on the counter and dishes in the sink. If you don’t clean up, it gets harder to cook! Your computer is the same way. Every time you open a program or a website, it leaves behind little “digital crumbs.”

The Fix: A simple “Restart” is like a magic wand that clears the counters and does the dishes.

How to do it:

  1. Click the Start button (the little window icon) in the bottom corner of your screen.
  2. Click the Power symbol.
  3. Choose Restart.

I recommend doing this at least once a week. It clears out all those tiny errors and lets your slow computer start its day with a clean slate.

The Program Purge: Lighten the Load

Over the years, we all end up with programs we don’t use anymore. Maybe it’s a game you played once, or a tool for a printer you don’t even own anymore. These programs can sit in the background, eating up your computer’s energy even when you aren’t using them.

The Fix: If you haven’t touched it in a year, it’s probably time to let it go!

How to do it:

  1. In your search bar (next to the Start button), type “Add or remove programs.”
  2. Look through the list. If you see something you recognize and know you don’t need, you can click it and select Uninstall.
  3. Pro Tip: If you don’t recognize the name of a program, don’t delete it! It might be something important that helps your computer stay safe.

Cleaning out these old “dust collectors” is one of the fastest ways to turn a slow computer back into a snappy one.

Go ahead and restart your computer now; you might be surprised at how much better it feels! If you’re worried about deleting the wrong program or your computer is still acting like a “slowpoke,” don’t hesitate to give me a shout. I’m always happy to swing by and give it a proper tune-up for you.

Common Questions About a Slow Computer

How often should I restart my computer? I recommend restarting your computer at least once a week. It’s like giving your computer a fresh start. It clears out the “cobwebs” and helps it run much more smoothly.

Will deleting an app also delete my photos or documents? Usually, no. Deleting a program (like a game or a web browser) only removes that specific tool. Your personal files, like your family photos or letters, stay right where they are.

Is it safe to delete programs I don’t recognize? If you aren’t sure what a program does, it is best to leave it alone. Some programs help your computer “talk” to your printer or stay safe from viruses.
