Helping My Mechanic—and His Tech
This was one of those feel-good, small-town computer cleaning projects that make running The Tech Shed extra rewarding.
Last week, I dropped by my mechanic’s shop, not just to get my car fixed but also to pick up some tech gear that needed attention. In exchange for some work under the hood, I offered a bit of help under the keyboard. He handed over two compact Lenovo Thin Desktop PCs and a Microsoft Surface tablet he’d picked up used from a local business.
Lenovo Thin Desktop Computer Cleaning
These Lenovos aren’t your everyday desktop computers. They’re slim, quiet, and made to slip right behind a monitor—perfect for saving space in a busy office. Though they looked a little tired, they had solid bones. I gave both a good physical cleaning, wiped the old data, reformatted the drives, and reinstalled Windows so they’d be fresh and ready for their next job.

The Microsoft Surface tablet needed the same kind of treatment. I made sure all traces of the previous owner were gone, gave it a fresh install of Windows, and tidied it up inside and out. While I was at it, I noticed a folder of family photos—mostly their dog—and offered to back them up. My mechanic happily accepted, so I moved them onto a complimentary Snoopy-themed USB stick. (Because, why not make tech support fun?)
This project reminded me why I started The Tech Shed. It’s not just about fixing up machines—it’s about building local connections, reducing waste, and giving good gear a second chance.
Got a computer collecting dust? Let’s make it useful again.
